I have been working as a sort of freelance webmaster at the Dark Cosmology Centre for a couple of years now. But as the amount of work varies a lot and I like to spend money, I have been on the lookout for an additional job for some time. A couple of weeks ago two job opportunities suddenly presented themselves to me and I accepted them both without hesitation. So now I suddenly find myself having three jobs.

The first of my new jobs is just an ordinary secretary-like adminstrative job at the Dark Cosmology Centre.

The second one is much more interesting. The Niels Bohr Institue (NBI) is about to launch an almanac on their home page with daily updates about when the Sun and Moon rise/set and what you can see on the night sky. They needed a student to write these daily updates and asked me if I wanted to do it (they had apparently heard good stuff about me ). I like that job. I get to write about astronomy and I can – within reasonable limits – write what I want. Also, a part of what I write will be broadcasted on huge plasma screens all over NBI.

Using 26 candles on the birthday cake seemed like a dangerous project (after all, I am me) so my original plan was to combine a 2-candle and a 6-candle. But as the local super market only had candles with the numbers 0-5 on them that was a no-go. Luckily plan B turned out to be much more fun as you can see. Best birthday cake ever!

Right after the exam Rasmus took me out for ice cream to celebrate. Sitting in the sun at “Sankt Hans Torv” with a huge ice cream, my boyfriend and a fresh bachelor degree I was feeling pretty happy. Tonight we will hook up with my parents and find a good restaurant in order to celebrate even more.

As I have completely failed to get a summer job I now have a couple of months of vacation to look forward to – way to go me!

In September I will return to the university. I have already signed up for my first master science courses: “General Realtivity and Cosmology” and “Astrobiology”; sounds pretty good, right? And if all goes well I will have a MSc in astronomy in just two years.

Who can worry about SU and sensible economy when tempted by that beauty?

They have finally upgraded the graphics card and the touch-pad has grown big and swallowed the only click-able button. One might write a funny joke about Steve Jobs and how he went from no right-click button to no buttons at all, but to be fair it works really well.

As a bonus I have put the hard disk from my old Macbook in a new dashing pink casing. It’s so cute and it fits right into my handbag.

I now have a cat. Her name is Peia (as in the constellation Cassiopeia) and she is eight months old. I have had her for a week now and she is the most curious and playful cat I have ever met. On top of that she is extremely social and cuddly; she follows me around everywhere and she lies next to me in bed all night. She constantly purrs and she even comes when called. It is very nice to have her to come home to.

Unfortunately she loves to play, sit and lie on my laptop keyboard which means this post took quite a while to write.

She has the energy of a kitten which makes it really hard to take pictures. Here is the best I could do:

In 2008 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) will arrange an symposium dedicated to Bengt Strömgren’s one-hundredth anniversary. Via my job at the Dark Cosmology Centre I was hired to do some work on the web-site of the event. My biggest assignment was to create a script to handle grant applications. The script gathers information about the applicant from a simple html form and creates a pdf-file which is both shown in the browser, e-mailed to the applicant and saved on the server. I have never worked with the pdf-functions in php before, but I think it turned out all right. So did the people in IAU. In fact, they asked me if I would give them the code behind the script along with a manual so that they could use it for all their future meetings! I happily did, of course. My work is now being used by a cool, international organisation – whoa!

Wednesday evening Mensa was testing eight potential members. And I was being tested as a potential tester.

Prior to this double test I had observed a couple of other tests to learn the procedure and this was to be my final exam. Two other testers were present to watch me carry the whole thing out and judge if I did a satisfactory job. It went well, I didn’t screw up too much and now I am officially a tester for Mensa Denmark!

So what is being a tester all about? Well, you set up dates and places. People come, get an introduction to Mensa and instructions regarding the test. Then you give them the test and keep an eye on them while they take it. Afterwards you answer all their questions. When they have left you mail the tests to the psychologist who analyses them. That is basically it. I bring people to Mensa!

Yesterday I had one of my life’s most horrible headaches. It was so bad that I couldn’t sleep even though I was very tired. After several hours of torture I went to the kitchen to find something cold in the freezer. I ended up with a pack of frozen bacon which I loosely wrapped in a dish towel and brought back to the bed. It actually helped lying there with a cold pack of bacon on my forehead and eventually I fell asleep.

This morning I woke up well rested and feeling good. In my arms I found the defrosted pack of bacon. I can’t even begin to describe the weird mix of feelings that stirred up.
